From February 27, the square in front of the Russian Embassy in Washington will be named after the Russian politician Boris Nemtsov, shot down on February 27, 2015 in the center of Moscow. This was announced by the head of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation Vladimir Kara-Murza Jr..
“A separate decision of the Washington City Council unanimously voted for the accelerated procedure for adopting the bill on the area of Boris Nemtsov to the Russian Embassy. The renaming will enter into force on February 27, ”he wrote on Facebook .
The ceremony will take part in both American politicians, members of the Congress, the city council of Washington, as well as Russian political and public figures, representatives of the Russian opposition, as well as family members, friends and associates of Boris Nemtsov himself, told Kara-Murza the younger in an interview with Echo of Moscow . He emphasized that this is the first official perpetuating of the memory of Boris Nemtsov anywhere in the world.
“We see that the current Russian authorities do not allow us to do anything to perpetuate the memory of the Russian statesman in Russia. The decision on the memorial plaque in Nizhny Novgorod was blocked. Those boards that the inhabitants of the houses in Moscow, in Yaroslavl themselves installed, were torn off . All petitions, all appeals about perpetuating the memory of Boris Nemtsov were rejected, blocked by the Moscow authorities. And the folk memorial on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge, where for almost three years people have been continuing to bring flowers every day, light candles, is periodically ruined, again with the participation of the Moscow authorities - “hormost” and the police, ”says the head of the Nemtsova Foundation. (How soon for three years now the people's memorial will survive opposite the Kremlin, read here: https://newtimes.ru/articles/detail/116056 .)
Meanwhile, in other countries there are initiatives to perpetuate Nemtsov’s memory. For example, in Prague, Kyiv, Vilnius.
The press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov did not comment on the renaming of the square in Washington to reporters.
“I would leave it without comment. This is the prerogative of the city authorities. Against the background of the fact that the state of relations between our two countries leaves much to be desired, to put it mildly, ”Peskov quoted “ Rain ” quoted.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, referring to the words of Peskov, refused to comment.
But the State Duma deputy from the LDPR Mikhail Degtyarev in response proposed to name the intra -breeding passage near the American embassy in Moscow to the North American dead end, Echo Moscow reports
