
The Shalinsky City Court of Chechnya arrested for two months the head of the regional "memorial" Oyub Titiev. It is reported by Interfax .
He is accused of illegal possession of drugs (Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Titiev claims that a police officer threw him drugs.
Titiev’s lawyer said the court’s decision would be appealed.
Oyub Titiev was detained on January 9 in Chechnya. On January 10, a search was held in Titiev’s house. According to Novaya Gazeta, his relatives were kicked out into the street and the keys were taken. They were also allegedly threatened. The press secretary of the head of Chechnya Alvi Karimov in an interview with Interfax rejected these accusations.
The head of the Council for Human Rights under the President (HRC), Mikhail Fedotov, said that the Council to appeal to the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with a proof to check the circumstances of the detention of Titiev. He also stated that the Investigative Committee should check the possibility of drug tossing to the head of the regional “memorial”.
Memorial is engaged in the study of political repression in Russia and the USSR. The organization was recognized as a foreign agent in 2014. Titiev headed the Chechen branch after the murder of human rights activist Natalia Estemirova in the republic.
