In 2017, Avito sold 1.6 million used phones, according to a company statement. Almost all of them were smartphones, the marketplace representative clarified. Smartphones account for 50% of all consumer electronics sold on Avito, the statement said. Almost half (46.6%) of the devices sold on Avito were iPhones. Samsung was in second place in popularity (18.1%), and Nokia was in third place, with a wide gap (4.9%). Buying phones from private sellers is very popular among Russians, Avito representatives conclude.

According to data from a partner of several electronics manufacturers for 11 months of 2017, Samsung occupied 1st place in unit sales of new smartphones, followed by Apple (12.9%) and Huawei with the Honor sub-brand (9.7%). At the same time, as of November, the iPhone accounted for almost 24% of smartphone sales in Russian online stores. Huawei and Samsung shared 2nd place (15% each).

According to calculations by Mobile Research Group leading analyst Eldar Murtazin, about 3 million used devices were sold in Russia last year. Every year, the secondary market in units makes up about 10% of new smartphone sales, he claims. This, in principle, corresponds to the global level, says Murtazin.

Euroset President Alexander Malis believes that the used smartphone market in Russia could be larger - about 4-5 million devices.

Telecom Daily CEO Denis Kuskov believes that in Russia, sales of used smartphones and push-button phones make up just over 10% of sales of new devices. It is difficult to accurately calculate their number - accounting for devices that are sold hand to hand, as well as sold in small shops and stalls, is practically impossible, he claims.

According to Murtazin, relatively few used smartphones are resold – significantly fewer than new ones. The rest are thrown away, given away, or put aside for future use, he says. In his opinion, Apple's leadership in the secondary market is due to the fact that in the vast majority of cases, flagship models are sold on the secondary market. Only for them can you get a more or less large sum. Selling a cheap device for pennies is unlikely to be of interest to its owner, Murtazin believes.

The average price of a device sold on Avito is 9,350 rubles, the trading platform reports. The average price of a new smartphone, previously called " M.video ", in 2017 was 13,400 rubles (43% higher than a used one).
