Facebook has agreed to conduct an additional investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 British referendum. The British believe that the Russian "troll factory" could have influenced the outcome of Brexit.
- British parliamentarians demanded that Facebook conduct an investigation after Facebook, Twitter and Google reported to the Senate in the fall of 2017 about the alleged use of their platforms by Russia to interfere in the US presidential election.
- The results of the first investigation did not satisfy the British: the accounts of the “troll factory” bought only three advertising posts for less than $ 1, and the referendum was not even mentioned in them. Coverage of posts amounted to no more than 200 people.
- According to an independent commission, 45,000 messages from Russian bots appeared on Twitter ahead of the referendum.
- Facebook was threatened with sanctions for a poor investigation, shortly after which Simon Milner, director of information policy for the social network in Britain, agreed to reopen the investigation.
What do I get from this?
The parliament's main claim against Facebook was that only the most famous St. Petersburg "troll factory", which is associated with businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, was checked. so far . If the new investigation yields any results, we may learn details about other centers of Russian trolls - for example, little is known about the "factory" associated with the Ministry of Defense and the GRU
