The Ministry of Internal Affairs found no evidence of the guilt of mathematician Dmitry Bogatov

The forensic center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs did not find any evidence of the guilt of mathematician Dmitry Bogatov. He is accused of calling for riots and justifying terrorism. The examination of the seized laptops and flash cards lasted eight months. It is reported that all charges against Bogatov may be dropped in the near future.

Dmitry Bogatov, a mathematician, was initially charged with inciting riots because of a proposal to go to Red Square on April 2, 2017, which was posted by someone under the pseudonym “Ayrat Bashirov” on the SysAdmins.ru forum. The calls were sent from Bogatov's IP, but Bogatov is the exit node operator of the Tor network, which means that any user could write from his IP.

After the arrest in April, the court, contrary to the requirements of the investigation, did not take Bogatov into custody. Then the charge was reclassified to a more serious one, imputing two articles - about calls for terrorist activities or justifying terrorism using the Internet and about preparing to organize mass riots, after which he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. However, on July 24, the mathematician was transferred from the SIZO to house arrest, which was later extended until January 31, 2018.
