Fraudsters will use fake ATMs at the 2018 World Cup

The Central Bank warns citizens: due to the influx of tourists, there may be many fake ATMs at the World Cup due to the influx of tourists. Banks will be required to install anti-skimming equipment

• The most popular way to steal data from cards is skimming equipment. A skimmer is a special overlay that is attached to a regular ATM, to the slot for receiving a card, and reads its data, and the scammers then make a copy. Banks are successfully fighting skimming, and during the World Cup, the Central Bank ordered them to install special anti-skimming equipment. Such an experience has already been at the Olympics in Sochi.
• But there is another type of fraud that the Central Bank does not warn about, and it is difficult for banks to deal with it. We are talking about fictitious ATMs: instead of putting a skimmer on a real car, scammers get an old ATM and install a skimming device on it. When the customer inserts the card and enters the pin code, the message appears on the screen that the service is not possible, and at this time the skimmer steals the data.
• ATMs may be obsolete devices of well-known banks and banks that have already had their license revoked. The cost of such an ATM is from 10 to 100 thousand rubles.
• The Central Bank advises using ATMs in safe places: hotels, airports, bank branches and shopping centers, but this is not a guarantee either - fake ATMs were previously found in Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo and in the Okhotny Ryad shopping center, where the fake ATM stood for two whole months.

What do I get from this?

Before inserting a card into an ATM, it is always worth checking if the device for accepting cards is separated from the terminal - it could be a skimmer. And about fake ATMs, you should warn foreign friends if they are going to come to the World Cup. The only way to be sure not to get caught is to withdraw money from bank branches.
