IOC: Acquitted Olympians from the Russian Federation may still miss the 2018 Olympics
The decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to lift the life-long suspension of 28 Russians from participation in the Olympic Games does not mean that they will be able to take part in the Games in Pyeongchang, the International Olympic Committee said on Thursday, February 1.
The IOC expressed regret that the CAS judges did not accept evidence of the existence of a state doping system at the Olympics in Sochi, which was used by Russian athletes. The IOC also said that the partial retention of restrictions for 11 of the life-suspended athletes means that their violations have been proven. The committee emphasizes that the decision to remove the Russian team from the Olympics in Korea and to disqualify the Russian Olympic Committee remains in force. The IOC may appeal against the verdict of the CAS.
On February 1, CAS upheld the appeals of 28 Russian athletes against the IOC's decision to suspend them for life. Another 11 athletes partially satisfied the appeals.
