Smartphone displays will protect diamond glass from damage

One of the noticeable disadvantages of modern smartphones is the relative fragility of the protective glass of their displays - with an unsuccessful fall to the hard surface, the screen can break or cover with cracks. Every year, manufacturers of protective glasses (for example, Corning ) represent improved versions of glasses, but owners of smartphones still have to use additional protection of the display in the form of covers or special film.

Akhan Semiconductor can solve this problem, which has been working for a special diamond glass for some time, which significantly exceeds existing analogues in strength, CNET writes.

According to Adam Khan’s executive director, a new glass called Miraj Diamond Glass can enter the market in 2019, and currently the company cooperates with two unnamed companies, one of which produces smartphones, and the other - protectors for their screens.

As the publication explains, the feature of the glass Miraj Diamond Glass is that artificial diamonds are used in its production. A random nanocrystalline pattern is formed on the surface of the glass, which, unlike the ordered, protects glass from deep cracks. At the same time, new glass can be used in combination with existing solutions, including Gorilla Glass, as the upper layer.

However, before the release of the first devices with diamond glass and protectors from it, partners have to conduct a lot of tests. So, now companies are checking if the use of this glass affects the performance of the sensory display, and also try to reduce its reflective ability, which negatively affects the convenience of using a smartphone with such glass, since it forces to increase the brightness of the screen, which leads to increased energy consumption.

It is worth noting that for the first time about the development of Akhan it became known about a year ago, and then the company promised to release diamond glass until the end of 2017. It is possible that the output of Miraj Diamond Glass will be postponed again. In addition, we can confidently assume that smartphones that will receive diamond glass will cost quite expensive taking into account the cost of its production.
