Russia began to send North Korean labor migrants to their homeland in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution. This was stated by the Russian ambassador to Pyongyan, Alexander Mamegora, reports Interfax.
“It will be a blow to the Russian economy, a serious blow, especially the Far East,” said Macegora. “But we are fulfilling the UN Security Council strictly, without fail.”
At the same time, the ambassador emphasized that the North Koreans who refused to return to their homeland were not subject to expulsion. “We are not returning anyone to the DPRK,” said Macegora. “We are in contact with the UN Commissariat for Refugees. All the problems of these people who decided not to return, we solve.”
The diplomat denied reports that North Korean citizens work in Russia "in slave conditions." According to him, the workers from the DPRK pay about the same as the Russians. On average, they receive about $ 500 per month in Russia.
According to the ambassador, 12-15 thousand Russian visas are issued annually by North Korean citizens. These are mainly visas for temporary work. The maximum number of workers from the DPRK working in Russia was up to 37 thousand people. “They work throughout Russia, do not go individually, but collectively,” the diplomat noted. “These are mainly builders, but they also work in the Far East at our fish factories, they work in agriculture.”
In December, the UN Security Council in connection with the Sseve-Korean missile and nuclear program tightened sanctions against the DPRK . In particular, all states were prescribed in a two -year term from the date of adoption of the document to deport all North Korean workers to their homeland.
The Russian Foreign Ministry then stated that it was possible to achieve a removal of the provision on the unlimited, "landlord" repatriation of North Korean labor migrants. “Now we are talking, in fact, about their return to their homeland within a 24 -month period. Moreover, this requirement does not apply to the North Koreans who have become citizens of the adopt state or those whose repatriation is not allowed in accordance with national legislation and international law,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained then.
