All Russian books will be digitized

The creation of such a project under the National Electronic Library was announced at parliamentary hearings on the topic “Digitalization in the field of culture, legislation and law enforcement practice”.

The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation set itself the goal of digitizing all the books published in Russia. “As part of the creation of the National Electronic Library (NEB), we set ourselves the goal, it is quite ambitious. We believe that in electronic form all books and other capital publications that have been ever published in Rus', the Russian Empire, the USSR and modern Russia in any language should be obtained. Such work is underway, ”said the First Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Aristarkhov, during the parliamentary hearings on“ Digitalization in the field of culture, legislation and law enforcement practice ”.

The deputy minister also added that in the future, the National Electronic Library is a portal where any edition can be found.

Another goal, he called the creation of a single Russian electronic space of knowledge. “The goal of a higher level, one of the elements of which is the creation of a national library, is the creation of a single Russian electronic space on the basis of the NEB. Here the information will be not only a book, ”V. Aristarkhov explained. According to him, in a single Russian electronic space of knowledge, there will be only reliable information, verified by specialists and experts.

The Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy, in turn, believes that there is an objective need to ensure equal possibilities for access to cultural values and benefits for all Russian citizens, regardless of their place of residence.

“The main museums, libraries and archives are still located in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and only a small number of citizens of a large country have access to them and their funds. And if with the classics of Russian literature the question, one can say, is resolved, since all the works included in the school curriculum have long been in digital form, then things are somewhat worse with museum expositions, ”said Tolstoy.

The legislator also added that not all Russians currently have the opportunity to access the Internet. As another important nuance, he called the financing of the digitization process: today, museums are obliged to conduct it at the expense of their own funds.
