Permission to industrial shooting seals in Lake Baikal is trying to achieve the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. According to officials, this will give the region new jobs, as well as valuable fur and raw materials for medical purposes.
In Buryatia, the idea has been discussing for about a year to return the industrial fishing of the Baikal endemic. Officials focus on the fact that the population of the seals exceeded “all reasonable limits” and to cancel the ban on shooting there are “scientific justifications”.
The total number of Baikal seal over the past 10 years has grown, according to the Buryatia government, from 91 to 131 thousand heads, and to “regulate the population”, it is necessary to resolve the murder of 4-5 thousand seals per year.
The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation notes that when the ban on industrial shooting seals in Buryatia, new jobs will appear, which were seriously reduced after the ban on the catch of the Baikal Omul. At the same time, officials of the ministry do not specify the number of new jobs, writes the portal Ria.ru.
In October-November, 141 dead seals were found on the shores of Lake Baikal, during the expedition, employees of the Limnological Institute discovered another 18 carcasses on the coast near the Buryat village of Mishikha. Animals were not thrown ashore, they died in water, and after a wave they carried the bodies. Infectious diseases, like a plague or rabies, were not found in the dead animals.
