1988 Armenian pogrom in Sumgait

30 years ago, on February 27, 1988, as a result of a pogrom in the city of Sumgayit (Azerbaijan), organized by local residents, as well as Azerbaijani refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh, 26 Armenians and 6 Azerbaijanis were killed. According to the Armenian estimate, there were 3 more people killed. The pogroms continued until 29 February. About 80 rioters were convicted by courts outside of Azerbaijan. One of them, Akhmed Akhmedov, was sentenced to death.
