In Volokolamsk, a rally against the landfill attracted more than 5,000 people

More than 5,000 people rallied in the Moscow region of Volokolamsk on Saturday to protest against the Yadrovo solid waste landfill, located near the city. The organizer of the rally in Volokolamsk, Artem Lyubimov, told Vedomosti about this.

During the rally, residents demanded to close the landfill in Yadrovo, dismiss the head of the district and a number of employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and also protested against the construction of waste processing and incineration plants, says Lyubimov. “The leadership of the local administration actually hid the emergency situation from residents: the Ministry of Emergency Situations provided the results of air tests that did not show exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) of hydrogen sulfide in the air, but further research by Rospotrebnadzor revealed that the MAC was exceeded by 2.5 times in Volokolamsk itself,” he said. Last June, residents of Balashikha complained during a direct line to President Vladimir Putin about the smell from the Kuchino landfill. On Putin's instructions, the landfill was closed, but its reclamation has still not been completed.

Over the past few months, protests against landfills have taken place in several other cities in the Moscow region - in Kolomna, Naro-Fominsk, Voskresensk and others. Residents are unhappy with the increased load on landfills, which until 2017 were used only for local needs. They demand their closure and also protest against the construction of waste incineration plants.
