Gorbachev called the UN to emergency steps because of the actions of Russia and the United States, similar to preparing for a real nuclear war

Russia and the United States should stop the nuclear weapons race - such an idea was expressed by the ex -president of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev in a column for the American magazine Time . He proposed to convene an emergency session of the UN General Assembly or a meeting of the Security Council at the level of heads of state to discuss the situation and the danger of a global disaster.

"Defense planning looks more and more like preparations for a real war in the conditions of the ongoing militarization of politics, thinking and rhetoric," Gorbachev writes. He clarified that we are talking about the new National Security Strategy of the United States and the American nuclear doctrine , as well as the recent demonstration by Russian President Vladimir Putin of the latest weapons, which has no analogues in the world.

Gorbachev noted that the "Bulletin of the Airian scientists" published in Chicago, which since 1947 has evaluated the danger of a nuclear war, recently translated the symbolic "Day of the Fated Day" half a minute closer to the "midnight", that is, to a nuclear disaster. "Now, according to scientists, we are two minutes from the global disaster. The last time this level of threat was marked in 1953, ”said Gorbachev.

In his opinion, the main responsibility for the exit from the current dangerous impasse lies with the leaders of Russia and the United States, and they do not have the right to evade this responsibility, since the weapons of these powers exceed the power of other countries. However, “all hopes should not be laid only on the presidents,” Gorbachev notes.

"Two people will not be able to display all the rubble that arose not yesterday, puzzled for many years. We need a dialogue at all levels and mobilization of efforts, including the expert community of both countries. This is a huge intellectual potential, it must be used in the interests of the world," the executive leader of the USSR believes.

Gorbachev expressed confidence that the vast majority of people both in Russia and in the United States agree that war cannot be a solution to problems. "Can weapons solve the problems of the environment, terrorism or poverty? Can it solve internal economic problems?" - writes the ex-president of the USSR.

"We must remind the leaders of all nuclear powers of the obligation under the agreement on non -proliferation of nuclear weapons: negotiations on reduction and ultimately the liquidation of nuclear weapons. Their predecessors signed this obligation, and it was ratified at the highest level of their governments. The world without nuclear weapons: another final goal cannot be," Gorbachev concluded.
