Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, in a column for Time magazine , proposed convening an emergency session of the UN General Assembly or a meeting of the Security Council to remove the threat from the nuclear arms race between the US and Russia.
According to Gorbachev, one should not rely only on the leaders of the two countries in this matter.
“Two people will not be able to clear all the rubble that did not arise yesterday, that has piled up for many years. We need dialogue at all levels and mobilization of efforts, including the expert community of both countries. This is a huge intellectual potential, it must be used in the interests of the world,” wrote the ex-leader of the USSR.
Gorbachev also recalled that the recently published Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in Chicago, which has been evaluating the danger of nuclear war since 1947, recently moved the symbolic Doomsday Clock half a minute closer to "midnight" or nuclear catastrophe.
