The former head of the oil company Exxonmobil Rex Tillerson was perhaps one of the most qualified and famous members of the US President Donald Trump. Like many people from Trump’s entourage, Tillerson did not have experience in public service, but this did not bother him.
Having headed the State Department, Tillerson was faced with a lack of personnel, since many old departments did not want to work in the Trump administration. As a diplomat, he adhered to moderate positions and often contradicted the statements of the president. For example, when in the summer of 2017 Trump came up with new nicknames for the DPRK leader Kim Jong -un, Tillerson talked about contacts with North Korean diplomats and softened the tone of discussion.
The author of the book about Exxonmobil Steve Coll told in an interview with Bloomberg that Tillerson was extremely effective at the head of the oil company and managed to build a “private empire”, where each employee was in its place. He failed with the State Department: surrounded by advisers without the experience of the diplomatic service, he could not find a way to quickly appoint effective people to the right posts.
But this was not the only problem of Tillerson. He is one of the few people in the White House administration who is not really familiar with the president. Trump did not really listen to his opinion, they had different views on many questions: the president considered the Iran’s nuclear program, which was concluded by the Barack Obama administration, a complete failure, and Tillerson supported her.
Tillerson and many other views and actions of the president did not like. For example, Trump did not condemn the neo -Nazis who staged a march in Charlotsville - and Tillerson publicly criticized him. Trump also made a political speech to the members of the “Boyskouts of America”, an organization that traditionally rests aloof from politics. She was headed by Tillerson at one time.
In the summer of 2017, after one of the meetings in the Pentagon, Tillerson even called Trump a “damn cretin”, according to the sources of CNN and other publications. The reason was Trump's statement about the need to increase nuclear weapons. Then Tillerson allegedly wanted to quit, but decided to wait.
If in the summer of 2017 Tillerson wanted to resign himself, then, judging by the reports of The New York Times, since November last year, the Trump administration has been preparing to dismiss him. It was a question of resignation for several weeks, and the director of the CIA Mike Pompeo was called the new Secretary of State.
According to The Washington Post, Trump finally decided to get rid of Tillerson on March 9. At the same time, he did not speak with the Secretary of State himself and did not call the reasons for the resignation, says one of Tillerson's deputy Steve Goldstein. He claims that Tillerson did not want to resign and planned to continue work.
After the announcement of dismissal, Trump admitted that they had disagreements, especially in Iran and North Korea. The President noted that he agreed to meet with the DPRK leader Kim Jong -un without consulting Tillerson.
On March 12, the US Secretary of State stated that, according to him, it was Russia who was behind the poisoning of the former GRU officer Sergei Skripal in English Salisbury - and promised to take measures in connection with Russian interference in the affairs of one of the most important world partners of the United States. This statement became one of the most stringent statements by American high-ranking officials about Russia, but it is unlikely that it could be the reason for the resignation or somehow influence the decision of Trump.
After Tillerson’s resignation, the US President himself stated that the UK considers Russia responsible for the poisoning of Skripal by a neuro-paralytic substance-and will accept this as a fact during the upcoming conversation with Teresa May. Whether any new American sanctions will be accepted in relation to Russia in connection with the poisoning of the spy, it is not reported.
T-shirt of Pompeo was called the successor to Tillerson in the summer of 2017. The Director of the CIA, according to Trump, thinks as the president and is in solidarity with him on many issues, including the Iranian nuclear program. Pompeo is a person of extremely conservative views, a supporter of the radical republican movement “tea drinking”. He began a political career recently, in 2010, when he was elected to the House of Representatives from Kansas. Since then, he defeated the congress elections four times and became a prominent representative of the wing of ultra -conservatives.
Pompeo supports the mass system of surveillance for the correspondence, which was introduced by the National Security Agency and about which the former NSA employee Edward Snowden told the world. He advocates the overthrow of the regime in North Korea and believes that Kim Jong -un does not need to negotiate. He supports “advanced interrogation techniques” in the CIA-that is, torture that widespread in secret prisons of the American intelligence services around the world (Gina Haspel, his deputy and candidate for the post of new CIA director, in the early 2000s managed one of these prison in Thailand).
At the beginning of 2017, the Human Rights Watch International Human Rights Office opposed Pompeo's appointment by the Director of the CIA.
