The Supreme Court of Chechnya upheld the arrest of the head of the Chechen Memorial Oyub Titiev, who is accused of storing drugs. This was reported in the telegram channel of the human rights center "Memorial".

Judge Gorbovtsov recognized the decision of the Staropromyslovsky District Court and rejected the appeal of Titiev’s lawyers. The human rights activist will remain in custody until May 9.

During the hearing, lawyer Marina Dubrovina filed a motion that Titiev was sitting not in the iron cage, but next to lawyers. Content in the cage, it indicates, violates the 3rd article of the European Convention:

No one should be subjected to torture, nor inhuman or humiliating dignity or punishment

The judge did not satisfy the petition, because there is no suitable premises in the Supreme Court.

Lawyer Pyotr Zaikin recalled that when choosing and extending a preventive measure to the court, they presented a report of the operative that Oyub Titiev could hide. But what is written in it is unknown. The first instance court did not check this information and did not appreciate the “evidence”.

Judge Gorbovtsov began to explore this report. In it, the operative man Mandzhikov writes that Titiev can hide from the investigation. Lawyers indicate that there is not a single confirmation of this in the report. Oyub Titiev himself noticed that Mandzhikov was not familiar.

Lawyers emphasize that the head of the Memorial has constant income and sustainable social ties. He will not put pressure on the participants in the process and hide if he is released from custody. In addition, the court of first instance did not appreciate the petition for the guarantee of presidential candidates Yavlinsky and Sobchak - this is not reflected in the protocol.

The lawyer Dubrovin says that the court refers to the severity of the prosecution, and this foundation is not sufficient for the maintenance of the accused. The preventive measure is securing, not punitive, and arrest is not needed. She adds that the arrest of the head of the Chechen Memorial is politically motivated. The authorities are trying to stop his human rights activity.

Pyotr Zaikin claims that the preliminary investigation bodies want to forcibly hold the human rights activist in order to achieve his self -breeding.

Earlier, lawyer Zaikin said that there is falsification in the case: a refusal to initiate a case on the police who detained Titiev and allegedly found drugs in his retroactively.

The arrest was extended on March 6. * January 19 at the Grozny Office of the organization was a search. On the night of January 17, unknown in masks set fire to the Memorial office in Ingushetia. January 18, the security forces also came to the hostess of the premises in Grozny, which is renting a “memorial”. They demanded to open the door to the organization’s office and convinced the woman that “she is not right,” because she was handing over the premises to human rights activists. In the evening of January 22, in Makhachkala, unknown people set fire to the car of the Memorial representative office in Dagestan.
