Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was detained by the police in the case of financing his 2007 election campaign by the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. It is reported by Reuters with reference to a source in court.
Sarkozy in the near future will be questioned as part of the investigation of this case.
In 2011, Gaddafi and his son said that Sarkozy received money from them for the 2007 presidential campaign. The document signed by the head of the Libyan foreign intelligence of Abdullah al-Senussi, confirming Libyan financing, was published in 2012 by the online publication of Mediapart. In total, Gaddafi allocated Sarczya 50 million euros. The authenticity of the document is confirmed by numerous examinations and evidence. Nevertheless, Sarkozy called him a "rough fake" and sued Mediapart.
In 2016, the key mediator Ziad Takiddin confirmed that at the end of 2006 - early 2007 he personally carried cash from Tripoli to a total of 5 million euros from Tripoli to Paris. Twice he transferred the money to the closest ally of Sarkozy - Claude Geano, and once the presidential candidate himself. The investigation established that during the years of the reign of Sarkozy, Gean conducted all cash settlements, practically did not withdraw money from his account and rented a giant banking cell in Paris. During the interrogation, he claimed that the printouts of the Sarkozi speeches were stored there. It was also established that for Libyan money, Hean purchased an apartment in Paris.
In 2012, the testimony against Sarkozy was given by Al-Senussi, accused of organizing a terrorist attack over Tener: on September 19, 1989, a passenger of the French airline UTA was blown up over the Nigerian desert, 170 people were killed. In 2005, at a secret meeting with Al-Senussi in Tripoli, Sarcosi promised him assistance in terminating the criminal prosecution. According to the participants in the meeting, Sarkozy said that in case of victory in the elections, Al-Senussii would have mercy "if not the first, then the second presidential decree." As Mediapart wrote, the Sarkozy administration really opposed the arrest of Al-Senussii, and his interests were defended by the personal lawyer Sarcosi, who is now taking place with the ex-president in another criminal case.
The media also noted that the leading role of France in the overthrow of Gaddafi in 2011 could be associated with the personal interest of Sarcosi in the elimination of the Libyan dictator.
A criminal case against Sarcosi was opened in 2012. However, in October 2013, the French prosecutor's office agreed with the closure of this case.
In 2017, the case was resumed. The judge brought the sarcose preliminary charges, so indicating that the investigation has enough evidence to begin the criminal process. The investigation significantly advanced after the arrest of January 8 this year of another adventurer -intermediary - Swiss businessman Alexander Jukhri. Now he is in custody in London, waiting for extradition to France. Jukhri is closely connected with the head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, his son is married to the daughter of the mayor of Nizhny Tagil Sergey Nosov, one of the close closers of Chemezov.
Sarkozy was also suspected of illegally obtaining 150 thousand euros to the election campaign from the owner of L'Oreal Lilian Betankurkur. In July 2014, Sarkozy was detained in the case of abuse of authority ("Buskurk case). After a 15-hour interrogation in the police station, he was an official accusation of giving a bribe, using his official position for personal purposes ("trade") and concealing the fact of violation of commercial secrets. Sarkozy suspected that he received from the judge information about the progress of the case about the possible illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign. In particular, the representative of the court warned the sarcose about the wiretapping of his phone.
In addition, in February last year, Sarkozy was charged in another case. His party falsified financial reports in order to conceal the overspending of funds allocated to his presidential election campaign in 2012, in the amount of 18 million euros. The ex-president himself claims that he knows nothing about the overspending of funds.
In November 2016, Sarkozy, after the defeat in the first round of the primaries at the choice of a candidate for the post of head of state from the right, announced the completion of a political career . "It was time for me to lead a life with a large number of private passions and with a fewer passions of public. Good luck of France," Sarkozy said.
