Direct elections of the mayor in Yekaterinburg have been officially canceled - such a decision on Tuesday morning was made by the Sverdlovsk Legislative Assembly. 42 deputies out of 46 voted for the abolition of the elections. This means that already in September the head of the city will be selected by deputies of the City Duma from the candidates represented by the tender commission - that is, the region actually appointed by the regional administration. The bill on the cancellation of the elections was previously introduced by the Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Yevgeny Kuyvashev.

On the eve of Yekaterinburg, a rally was held for maintaining direct elections of the mayor. According to the organizers, from 6 to 7 thousand people took part in it. The police counted - 1.5 thousand. At the same time, in the application for the rally there was a figure - 99 people. The organizers told Novye that they specially underestimated the alleged number of participants so that they would not put the framework on the square. The initiator of the action was the current mayor of the city Evgeny Roizman. Oppositionist Dmitry Gudkov and the head of the Federal Staff of Alexei Navalny Leonid Volkov came to support the politics. Volunteers of the Yekaterinburg headquarters of Navalny also connected to the distribution of information leaflets about the rally. For several days, they laid out the “invitations” in the mailboxes in houses and through social networks called to come to the action.

The gathers on the defense Square on Monday demanded the resignation of Governor Kuyvashev, maintaining direct elections and expressed their support to Roizman. As a sign of support, they held thousands of red balls in their hands (Roizman has a red jacket). People brought the posters “Our Home - our Rules”, “The city is us”, “Free people are honest elections” to the action.

The applicant of the rally deputy of the City Duma Dmitry Golovin shared his assumption with his “new” one a couple of days before the action that if more than five thousand people came to it, citizens will be able to defend the mayor’s elected position. Now Golovin says that he did not expect such an uncompromising decision, and what is happening - “spit in the face” to all residents of the city from the administration:

- They say by their decision: "You are no one in this city." I strongly doubt that people will come to terms with this. In literally the last two months, two such delicious spit were made in the face of the city’s citizens. The first is a demolished television tower (almost a symbol of the city). There were protests against this, but the answer followed: "You are promoting on this topic." The second is the abolition of the mayor’s elections. The administration, apparently, was waiting for the presidential elections when the people in a single impulse say: "Do with us what you want, we will accept everything."

Golovin believes that Roizman has zero chances to be in the list of candidates, whom the competitive commission will offer (if he, of course, wants it): “Roizman is moving in completely different motives. Even the manner of his speech infuriates their speech. He is from another test. They are boring appointments in gray jackets. He is alive, real. With people. "
