On April 6-7, the cinema “Karo 8 Atrium” will be shown two films - the nominees of the Golden Arca Prize: “Westerna” by Valeski Grisebach and “November” Rainer Sarnet. The review of Anna Melikova to Western - and her interview with Gryzabi - can be read here . And restrained enthusiasm for November - below.
Above the gray plain of the November field, a flying Kolovrat, collected from scrap and sticks and sticks, frantically rushed. With a terrible clang, in everydayly falling into air pits, he tracks the prey. And so, with all the dope, falling into a frozen dirt, a wild mobile, decorated with a cow's skull, bursts into an unlocked stable and stuck a heifer from there. The usual thing in any Finno-Ugric village, where the dead continue to be, eat, drink and have sex with the living (see Kulem ), demons instill in the old women through the kvassy (see hiccups ), and the souls of the dead are in the red corner of the hut (see Ittarma ).
© Homeless Bob ProductionThe Gothic comedy “November” (with all the desire, it is difficult to call this hilarious folk Horror) was shot by Rainer Sarnet based on Estonian folklore, creatively retold by his friend, writer Andrus Kivirykhk, and, in general, represents a kind of fairy tale of fairy tales: a dashed plot line about the plain love of the glass of a village girl to Kudryavoy Ooluhu, Falling in love, in turn, in a panel-jail-this is a thread on which a whole bestiary is strung; A romantic lave-story with transformations and witchcraft is drowning in a rich earthly texture of folk beliefs. On the day of all the saints, the pale Estonian dead return from the other world to eat an rye bread and take a steamm in the bathhouse. After the sacrament, the peasants, going around the corner of the church, spit the caches to cast bullets from them - the flesh of Christ will never fly past the target. Homemade golems from improvised materials (like described above) with devilish enthusiasm fulfill any orders of the owner - unless, of course, to provide them with a soul, deceived by a damn at a night intersection. The unsuccessful boyfriend brings his heart to his lady, naturally, a pie with shit - to love her to her forever (it will not come out). Household, ubiquitous paganism laughs at decorative, superficial Christianity - how the plague men (and authors of the film) laugh at a refined German baron, always pinching his nose and covering his eyes, so as not to see and do not smell all the breadth of folk basket culture.
© Homeless Bob ProductionThis subversive irony (the film’s subversiveness was perfectly believed in Estonia - Sarnet could not get the consent of church communities to conduct filming in the temple, until one brave church on the island of Saarema did not meet him) is combined in November with a rather aesthetic, skillfully bleached, wiped and polished picture. Almost the entire film was shot in the night (glory to digital technology), really in the winter, among the real impassable mud, such a sweet heart and a Russian viewer. He will find a response to his abrasion anti -colonialism, which can easily be mistaken for an anti -war, deeply rooted in the folk character: yes, the unwashed old -play is terrible here is terrible face and habits, but the sleek civilized German from the castle with curls - he is completely half a trap, stupid white gentleman, who can and should deceive and deceive. In general, watching “November” causes envy - such a movie should naturally grow in us and, say, from the Perm animal style, and amateur directors, say, Kudymkara would have to compete with Sakhavud fees in the rural box office; In the meantime, this vast territory of everyday life and fairy tales of numerous small peoples was mastered only by Fedorchenko (“Heavenly wives of meadow Marie”) and to some extent Khamdamov (“A bag without a bottom”). The latter, however, with his characteristic aristocratism, casts up Russian folk plots and images to a high antique style. By the way, despite the general pollution of people and interiors, “November” has something in common with the “bag”: the charming combination of the old and new, tradition and innovation, folk and technology, beautiful, like a German baroness in a white, blind lunatic walking along the roof of a roof, and terrible, like a dead relative, who was digging into a black woman.
