In Berlin, a terrorist attack is prevented during the half marathon. The Die Welt newspaper reports that the police detained six men who prepared an attack on the audience of a race with knives.
According to the publication, the main suspect "belonged to the circle" of the terrorist Anis Amri, who had a collision with the Christmas market in Berlin in 2016. Two knives were seized from him, with the help of which he planned to attack guests of a sports event.
The interlocutor in the police said: "We are still evaluating the situation. But, in all likelihood, this happened at the last moment."
According to the police, the attackers were going to "take revenge" for Amri, who was shot by Italian police officers a few days after the attack, RIA Novosti reports.
It is also reported that during the search, one of the detainees was found an object that could be explosives. One of the premises that are currently being searched was already in the police attention after the Christmas terrorist attack.
About 32 thousand people took part in the half marathon.
