Moscow region authorities promised to eliminate the unpleasant smell in Volokolamsk in a month and a half

The problem of an unpleasant smell from the Yadrovo test site in Volokolamsk will be resolved in a month and a half at the latest. This was stated by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Moscow Region Alexander Kogan.

He said that since April 14, garbage will no longer be delivered to Yadrovo, and degassing of the landfill will begin.

In addition, in the next six months, it is planned to build a plant for the neutralization of organic waste near the landfill. After that, organic waste will no longer be buried in the landfill, due to the decay of which landfill gas is formed, Kogan said.

• Since the beginning of 2018, residents of Volokolamsk have been demanding the closure of the Yadrovo landfill. In early March, after a series of protests, the governor of the Moscow region, Andrey Vorobyov, instructed to solve the problem of unpleasant odors from the landfill within three months.
• On March 21, there was a landfill gas release at Yadrovo, after which dozens of children sought medical help. When, in connection with this, the governor and the head of the Volokolamsk district, Yevgeny Gavrilov, arrived in the city, local residents greeted them with shouts of “Shame!” and "Killers!". Soon Gavrilov was fired.
• Acting head of the district Andrey Vikharev announced the introduction of a state of emergency. But the Ministry of Emergency Situations saw no reason for this and limited itself to distributing respirators and masks to Volokolamsk residents due to harmful emissions from the landfill.
• On April 5, employees of the economic security department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Moscow Region seized documents from the administration of Volokolamsk. The city authorities attributed this to the protests against the landfill.
• The next rally against Yadrovo in Volokolamsk will take place on 14 April.
