Two -time Oscar laureate. Collector of all kinds of awards. Favorite of the general public and capricious synophiles. Legendary and unknown.
He gave us a recipe for freedom. It was only necessary to realize the words of the old song, which became the epigraph of his most famous film: "Someone flew west, someone flew east, and someone flew over the cuckoo nest." The flight from a psychiatric hospital is like a flight to freedom. As an opportunity ... she was. Why didn’t we use it?
His full -length debut “Black Peter” and the “love of blondes” and “Ball of firefighters” who followed him brought worldwide fame, became the foresight of the Prague Spring.
And when the Soviet tanks entered Prague, Forman emigrated to the country, which seemed to him by the space of creative freedom. Alas, there are no territories of absolute freedom on the map of the globe. Million of torment fell to his lot, as a share of any genuine artist.
He called his first American film “Taping” to his “last Czech film”. Again, as in early work, a conflict of generations, but the United States was seen by the eyes of a foreigner. And he was terribly offended. The film with a bang failed at the American box office: the Americans were not ready to laugh at reality. The director was even accused of disrespect for the American flag, promised to send back to Czechoslovakia.
He revised Kezy’s brilliant novel “Flying over the cuckoo’s nest”, turning the hero into a rebel against the dictatorship of the “silent majority”. And the picture with her “longing over the abyss” turned out to be consonant with the era of disappointments in unfulfilled dreams of the rebellious generation. He himself insisted on the choice of Jack Nicholson, and together they created a parable for all times - about the original true harmony of freedom even under the press of the punitive system.
Then there were an “Amadeus” (a costume duel between a genius and the “patron saint of all the mediocrity in the world” turned into an opposition to imprudent delightful freedom and subordination to the rules). The musical "Hair" with the final requiem on "Rouncing Sixth". Filted in a semi -domestic manner and at the same time openly theatrical "Ragtime". In the final of the film, Harry Gudini in a nationwide shirt, suspended by the legs, is raised high above the crowd, who escaped to stare at a person who was freed from any shackles. But such a focus is subject only to magicians. In the exquisite “dangerous games” in Valmon, the heroes are also forced to play according to the scenario proposed by high society, invisibly turning into puppets. In conservative in form, but scandalous in content “people against Larry Flint”, the creator of the famous porn journal challenged to society, for which he was indicatively punished.
More than ten years ago, the multi -figure fresco of Goya was created, the film mainly develops in the era of the Inquisition, and the artist appears as an observer, the “mirror of a thousand reflections” of the grimace of reality, which has turned into a dream that gives rise to monsters. Forman shot that society was developing, but people, alas, no.
He himself was looking for creative freedom, but the star-striped paradise was full of disappointments:
“In America, you have comfort and money, but you feel like a beast in a zoo: it does not smell like freedom there.”
Nevertheless, he rejected the existence with an eye, believing that living in fear is boring. Often he repeated: "What will not kill you will do more." According to the same principle, his movie heroes breathed. And Milos Forman himself could repeat after his McMurphy from “Flying over the cuckoo’s nest”: “Every day you are aching how hard and unbearable here, but you do nothing to change everything to get out of here. I even tried, damn it?! I even tried to do it! " He tried to do it. And he succeeded.
