The security forces entered the battle with two groups of underground participants in different parts of the city. At first they pursued four suspects who were driving by car VAZ-2109 on Suleiman Stalsky Street in Derbent. During the chase there was a shootout. Conflicting information came about the number of those killed: Interfax reported the three killed and one detained, RIA Dagestan reported that only one and three were detained.

Four more participants in the underground was barricaded in a private house in the Derbent District "Airport", Interfax reported . The security forces took the house storm and killed all defenders. As reported, a home -made explosive device with a capacity of 5 kilograms in TNT equivalent was found inside.
