“Terrua” is “Terruir” in Portuguese, as well as the name of the fourth studio album of the Tinavie indie-pop group, the vocalist and the author of the songs of which Tina Manysheva has been living in Paris for the past few years. In the fantasy Dream-Care Tinavie, played on a grand scale, adult seriousness and perfectionism, a bizarre combination of various musical cultures is felt. The album was composed and recorded between Paris, Moscow and St. Petersburg, and in addition to the members of the group, well-known studio professionals Andrei Alyakrinsky (Dobralet Studio) and Oleg Emirov attacked him. Tina Manyysheva and guitarist Dmitry Zilpet explained from which Terruar the songs of Tinavie are growing.
The history of this album is that we seem to turn to ourselves nine years ago, when we just got together when we recorded our first album “Augenblick” , which, as it is now, has become in a sense of our business card, our classic. The idea was to record a new album, not following some trends, currents, nothing. Just write down cool songs as we can do, in the state of the group in which we were at that moment.
It was very important for us to return to the record format when we play in the studio at the same time, all together. TINAVIE is a very concert group, and after working on the second and third albums, we felt that we did not have enough in the records of this feeling of a joint game. The first album "Augenblick" in 2010 we simply recorded for the weekend, played almost everything live. Then, of course, there was still studio work, but in general then we did the album somewhere in a month. We also recorded the main tool for Terrua in four days, we recorded a voice for several sessions, but as a result we worked on the information and additional arrangements for almost two years. In the arrangement of several songs, the composer and sound producer Oleg Emirov also participated. This album, it seems to me, is a combination of everything that we, as a group, have learned in nine years of existence.
When you have neither a producer, nor a director, nor a label that decides everything for you, this is the complexity and charm. We owe nothing to anyone, but there are a lot of problems that we need to solve ourselves. All organizational issues are ourselves. Plus, we now live in different countries. It was difficult, but also interesting to create songs without being next to each other. The new experience is for us.
© TinavieThere is still such a moment that our previous albums mainly consisted of songs, which we had already actively played at concerts by the time of recording. This time on the album two -thirds of the songs are completely new, no one has ever heard them. Due to the fact that Tina lives in France, we composed everything while in different countries. Previously, she brought songs to rehearsals, and we came up with music together, and this time Tina composed songs in Paris and sent us notes of voice, sketches of songs, and the guys and I already in Moscow invented music at rehearsals, playing with a recorded voice, that is, for Tina, it seems to me that this was a surprise in general - what happened in the end. We simply composed part of the music already in the process of recording in the Dobralet studio in St. Petersburg.
Once again, I am convinced that we can somehow magically gather around us a circle of professional people who believe in us and help us throughout the years of the group’s existence. For example, Andrei Alyakrinsky, who recorded and brought the album Terrua . Such people are priceless. Without them, I can’t imagine the opportunity to create, record and release our music.
When we already recorded almost everything, we began to think about the name that could unite this work done conceptually. There were different options: for example, on the album there is a song-led by Ursul, the heroine of the novel “A Hundred Years of Loneliness”, and we thought a lot towards magical realism, the direction in which Marquez worked and which, it seems to me, is very close to Tinavie music. But then at some point this French wine-making term “Terroir” (French Terroir ) appeared in the discussion.
This is not even a term, but a whole concept: it means a set of factors that affect how grapes grow in a certain area and what the final bouquet of wine is obtained. That is, “Terrua” is about why the album, relatively speaking, turned out to be the taste: Tinavie has its own special Terruar. Here are the distances that are now sharing us, our joint nine years of experience and our friendship, our hobbies, the people who surround us help us, circumstances that affect us. Then, when we saw a powerful image image created by the illustrator Masha Shishova based on this concept, we realized that the name is what was needed. For some time we thought about writing a word and eventually dwelled on an option, which is used, oddly enough, in Portuguese. And then it turned out that Tina lives in the Portuguese quarter, and everything fell into place.
