French President Emmanuel Macron, along with his wife Brigitte Macron, flew to the United States on an official three-day visit. As a gift to the American presidential couple, they brought an oak sapling from Belleau Wood, a French forest that American troops recaptured from the German army in World War I (and Trump, in response, carefully brushed dandruff off Macron's suit). They decided to plant the tree on the lawn of the White House; this was to become a symbolic gesture of the friendship of peoples. But something went wrong.
The photo, in which the presidents of France and the United States plant a tree with their own hands, and their wives in full dress watch this, immediately became a meme. Many felt that Donald Trump had finally done something useful:
