Richard Pipes was born in 1923 in Ceshin (Poland) in a Jewish family, which, after the occupation by the Nazis of Poland in 1939, fled to the United States.

He studied at Cornell and Harvard Universities, in 1958-1996 he was a professor of history, since 1996 - an honorary professor of the history of Harvard University.

In 1968-1973 he was the director of the Research Center for the Study of Russia at Harvard University, in 1973-1978 - the main scientific consultant of the Institute for the Research of Russia at the University of Stanford. He was a member of the team of experts created in 1976 by the American government to evaluate threats emanating from the USSR in 1981-1982 he headed the Eastern European and Soviet Union of the US National Security Council.

The author of many books, mainly dedicated to the history of Russia of the XIX - XX centuries, including “Russia under the Old Regime” (1974), “Russian Revolution” (1990), “Unknown Lenin” (1996), “Property and Freedom” (1999), as well as articles in periodicals, such as Commentary , The New York Times and the Times Literary Supplement .
