Students and graduates of the university told a three-hobby, what scientific tasks they work on and why they chose this university.

Daria Romanovskaya,
A student of the magistracy under the Biotechnology program:
- I knew that I want to engage in bioinformatics, and Skoltech, perhaps, is the only place in Russia where there is an educational program in the direction of biotechnology, and at the same time there is the opportunity to attend programming courses. A significant plus - all courses are read in English. Since this is the international language of the world scientific community, the ability to communicate freely, write and perceive information in English is a necessary condition for a further successful career. And, finally, in Skoltekh a unique combination of academic science and young, developing startups is presented.
We spent the summer between the first and second year of the magistracy working in the R&D department of developing biotechnological companies. In addition, I was lucky to work on a project to visualize the work of the CRISPR/CAS complex as part of the Visual Science command. This is an absolutely unique experience.
The task of the project was to create a training video in which the entire leaking process would be extremely detailed. Our student task was to analyze the existing literature and then prepare files with spatial structures of proteins that appear in the video. It’s very cool to see how a beautiful video is obtained from files with numbers sets! I am grateful to Skoltha for the opportunity to work in such an experienced and interesting team, I learned a lot.
Now I am working in the group of Professor Dmitry Pervushin on my diploma project-the development of computing methods for predicting the site binding sites. The definition of these areas is extremely important for understanding the regulation of genes expression in certain stages. Proteins associated with RNA act as regulators of many processes, so their correct interaction with nucleotide sequence is extremely important.
Experiments that determine the areas of the nucleotide sequence with which they interact are extremely complex and expensive, therefore, computer algorithms that can predict them are necessary. If we talk about applied value, you need to remember that mutations in these sites can lead to various diseases, including cancer. With the help of developed algorithms, one can evaluate the potential influence of various mutations on the normal functioning of the body and detect dangerous human health.
Students of Skoltha became the winners of the prestigious International Competition of the Communicator Awards in the category "For the highest skill". A high reward was obtained for revealing the secrets of the CRISPR-CAS genes system and creating an animated video on this topic, which has already managed to gain wide popularity among Internet users.

Nikita Veliev,
Student of the master's program "Space and Engineering Systems":
- He acted unexpectedly for himself. After studying at the MSTU to them. Bauman I had a difficult choice: which magistracy to choose. I examined various options: to stay in Bauman or change the profile - go, for example, in HSE.
At some point, I came to Skoltech on an excursion, looked at how the guys study, looked at professors, premises and laboratories. I was hooked by the atmosphere, everything is different here: attitude towards students, team. Even the tasks that we solve are very different from what I came across before. When I acted, I realized that I was not mistaken. The year flew by unnoticed, because there are a lot of tasks and interesting projects.
At the moment, I try not to miss a single opportunity to participate in various projects: for example, I was preparing and joined the Skoltekh team at student competitions in robotics Eurobot 2018. Most of the time is now leaving for the preparation of the master's thesis, its topic is associated with space, financial analytics and business planning.

Alexander Malakhov,
Magistrates Student under the Energy Systems program:
- When I first heard about Skoltech, I caught fire on the idea of acting: many interesting directions, training takes place in English, a large number of foreign students and active ties with foreign universities - all this, in my opinion, opens the way to the scientific world without borders. Separately, I note: Skoltech made it possible to make my move from Novosibirsk to Moscow as comfortable as possible, a worthy scholarship of the need to look for a part -time job, it became possible to completely plunge into scientific activities.
And after admission, I discovered additional advantages of training here: being in the same space with young scientists from different spheres, you can get experience, consultation and be inspired by almost any scientific field. And one more thing: high integration of computer sciences into training courses - a huge plus; I never programmed to Skoltech, but here it is not “some useful skill”, but the necessary tool that you quickly master and begin to use already in your works.
As a student of the Center for Energy Systems, I work on the problem of integrating renewable energy sources (VIE). The wind and the sun are stochastic in nature, and it is necessary to use modern mathematical models to predict the production of VES and SES. This problem is very relevant now, because every year the percentage of renewable reinforced concrete increases. In the future, such a model will help more optimally conduct an economic distribution of generation and increase the stability of the entire power system.

Ekaterina Kondratyeva,
A student of the magistracy under the Biotechnology program:
- It is difficult not to choose Skoltech if you dream of a scientific career: there is an international academic environment, wonderful, versatile people, and an open to the whole new community where they support initiative and enthusiasm. You can learn and draw new ones at almost every step. Do not believe it, but with his supervisor (professor of the CDISE Center Skoltha, the direction of “science of data” Alexander Bernstein. - Approx. Ed.) I met on the bus on the way to a lecture when I heard a conversation about medical equipment.
So, in an unexpected way, I, having entered the program “Biotechnology”, determined the theme of my scientific interests related to machine learning and processing of images. And this is one of the main advantages of Scoltekh is the interdiszi-plinarity: I myself can draw up my own curriculum if it turned out to be necessary for me from different directions-from processing signals and deep learning to neurosaines and molecular biology.
The project, in which I am actively involved, arose from a great idea to develop diagnostic tools in psychiatry and neurology. Now we are working on creating a program-an assistant for a doctor who is able to recognize epilepsy and depression by MRI. The task is very interesting and multidisciplinary, and we solve it together with doctors from the NPC to them. Solovyova.

Nikita Rybin,
Student magistracy under the Material Science program:
- For me, Skoltech is an opportunity to do what I love in the beautiful atmosphere of the scientific center. I am engaged in the study of thermoelectrics in the laboratory of computer design of materials under the guidance of Professor Artyom Oganov. Our work consists in the use of evolutionary algorithms (uspex) to search for new materials and precision quantum-chemical calculations from the first principles.
I am sure that the most important part of our university is people who are always ready to share ideas and create a working atmosphere around themselves. In addition, it is worth saying that laboratories and classes are perfectly equipped, huge support is felt.
Regarding the educational process, one can notice that students study in practice. Here you can not only choose training courses that are important specifically for your research, but also see how you get in theory, is used in practice in a laboratory or industry.
For example, most of the courses of the Materials Science direction, on which I am studying, is carried out in direct interaction with Scoltkh laboratories. Today, students on the course of Professor Nasibulin are told about carbon nanotubes or on the course of Professor Stevenson - about batteries, and tomorrow you can already try to conduct a visual experiment related to these topics in the laboratory. Actually, whoever you are-a brilliant theorist or workaholic experimenter-you will certainly find a place in Skoltha.

Vasily Krylov,
Student magistrates under the program "Mathematical Physics":
- For the first time, my supervisor Mikhail Finelberg told me about the magistracy of Skoltha in the direction of Mathematical Physics. At that moment, he already took the position of the professor in Skoltekh, but I finished the last course of the bachelor's bachelor's HSE and prepared a diploma dedicated to the study of the family of diversity arising in physics and called the “Kulonov branch of some super -symmetric theory of the field”.
I did not have the slightest idea of the physical origin of this object and approached it exclusively from a mathematical point of view (and in the third year I dealt with the geometry of the diversity of Gizecker, which, from a physical point of view, are the space of instant modules in the four -dimensional sphere). Thus, all the tasks that I solve in the senior courses of the undergraduate were somehow related to physical problems. In fact, I went to Skoltech to combine a mathematical approach and physical tasks, which, as it turned out, can be perfectly done as part of the direction of “mathematical physics”.
The task that I am now engaged in allows, using the spaces of monopols modules in a three -dimensional space, to build a certain fundamental mathematical object associated with the arbitrary reducative algebra Lee, namely, a universal wrapping maximum nilpotent sub -hebra of the corresponding algebra Lee. Thus, a new view arises at the fundamental object of the theory of representations, based on the geometry of a certain space, which naturally arises in the super -symmetric theory of the field.

Polina Shichkova,
Graduate of the magistracy under the program "Biotechnology":
- I received a bachelor's diploma at the Faculty of Biological and Medical Physics of MIPT. We had very strong mathematics and physics, but the Biomedical component was weaker. I wanted to expand the horizons in the field of modern biology in order to work at the junction of sciences. I found in Skoltekh the laboratory of Professor Philip Khaitovich, I liked his publications and his group of scientists in Skoltekh. I entered the magistracy: these were two very interesting and intensive years.
People are very important for me, I think this creates new opportunities: you will grow faster when you work with professionals, you study more when you study with experts.
In Skoltha, I was engaged in autism research, the theme of my diploma “The Effect of Snps on Gene Regulation and Metabolic Processes in Autism”. When engaged in autism, I saw that many fundamental questions about the brain still have no answers, and it became interesting for me to continue brain research. I graduated from the magistracy in Skoltech and entered the PhD Neuroscience in EPFL (Switzerland). Now I am engaged in computer modeling of brain metabolism there. It is important for me to deal with the task that potentially has practical applicability.

Ilias Giannakopowulos,
A graduate student under the program “Computing systems and data analysis in science and technique”:
- To work on my dissertation for obtaining the degree of PhD, I chose Skoltech, since I completely share the opinion of the university teachers that for fruitful research work it is necessary to use innovative ideas and approaches. In Skoltekh, not only all the necessary technical capabilities for conducting research, but also favorable conditions for the work of foreign students are created. And finally, no less important, I like to solve complex problems, and in Skoltekh I have such an opportunity.
Currently, I am engaged in improving the recently developed non -invasive method of constructing transverse profiles of electrical properties of human tissues according to MRI. The new method will allow you to receive information on the distribution of electromagnetic fields in the tissues of the human body, which can be used to expand the diagnostic capabilities of MRI, as well as increase the speed and accuracy of diagnosis compared to existing methods.
The in vivo profiles of electrical properties can also be used as biomarkers in the diagnosis of cancer and other pathologies, as well as to increase the therapeutic efficiency of the treatment methods, such as radio frequency hyperthermia and electrochemotherapy. It should be noted that the developed method is inherently an incorrectly set task, so the purpose of my project is to significantly modify it using modern machine learning methods and ensure its suitability for medical use by improving the quality and reliability of the fabrics obtained at the output.
