1938 Murder of Yevgeny Konovalets

80 years ago, on May 23, 1938, the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists Yevhen (Evgen) Konovalets was killed in Rotterdam. NKVD agent Pavel Sudoplatov, posing as a supporter of the OUN who arrived from Poland and represented the "anti-Soviet underground in Soviet Ukraine", handed Konovalets a mine disguised as a box of Lviv chocolates.

Subsequently, already in the 60s, Sudoplatov was never able to prove to the leadership of the KGB his role in eliminating Konovalets, since no documents were preserved in the archive. However, witnesses to the assassination described Konovalets' interlocutor as a person similar to Sudoplatov.
