1988 Explosion at Arzamas station

Thirty years ago, on June 4, 1988, an explosion occurred at the Arzamas station of the Gorky railway during the approach of a freight train. 91 people died, including 17 children, 1,500 people were injured. The explosion and fire destroyed 151 residential buildings. 823 families were left homeless.

The explosion was caused by non-compliance with the rules for transporting industrial explosives used in geological exploration. The version of the terrorist attack was not confirmed.
