President Vladimir Putin signed a law on retaliatory sanctions against the United States and other countries.
Details
- The document allows the head of state to retaliate against sanctions from the United States and other countries. In particular, the president may establish a ban or restriction on the import and export of products or raw materials from such countries.
- It is also indicated that the Russian leader has the right to take "other measures" of influence.
- At the same time, the document does not apply to essential goods, the analogues of which are not produced in Russia or in other countries. So, in the final version of the law there are no specific areas to which sanctions may apply - initially the list included , for example, medicines.
- The State Duma approved the bill on May 22, the Federation Council on May 30 .
Context
- In parallel with the law on counter-sanctions, the authorities are passing a bill criminalizing the enforcement of US sanctions on Russian territory, which, in its current version, is of great concern to Western companies and investors.
- Now the consideration of the document has been postponed , Kommersant wrote that they will try to “drag it out as much as possible” in order to make actual changes in the fall.
