The President of the United States Donald Trump and the leader of North Korea Kim Jong -un following a meeting in Singapore signed a joint declaration and thanked each other for the negotiations.
Officially, the content of the declaration is not disclosed, but its text is clearly visible in the photographs that journalists managed to make when Donald Trump out of habit showed the just signed document. The picture that the AFP reporter took was published by CNN.
The preamble of the Declaration says: Trump and Kim are “convinced that the formation of new relations between the United States and the DPRK will be a contribution to the world and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the world,” and admit that “mutual trust can help in denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.”
The document itself consists of four parts.
The first states that two countries support the formation of new relations.
The second leaders of the two countries assure that both the DPRK and the United States will be committed to establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The third part confirms the importance of the Phanmunjomsky agreement signed in late April by the leaders of South Korea and the DPRK.
The fourth part talks about the search and identification of the remains of prisoners of war and missing during the Korean War.
“It was a historical meeting, we decided to leave the past behind. We are going to sign a historical document, ”Kim Jong -un told reporters at the signing ceremony. According to him, the world "became a witness to huge changes."
In response, Trump said that negotiations laid the foundation for his “special relationship” with Kim Jong -un. According to the American president, the signed document is comprehensive. He promised that DPRK denuclearization would “begin very soon”.
Trump also told reporters that Kim Jong -un is a worthy negotiator and a “gifted person”. Immediately after the signing of the memorandum, he promised to invite the DPRK leader to a new meeting in the White House. “I will do it,” he assured, adding that he himself was ready to come to Pyongyang.
Recall that the Singapore summit is the first personal meeting of the US President and the leader of North Korea. To organize negotiations in Pyongyang, Mike Pompeo flew several times, who is now heading the State Department, and then he acted as the head of the CIA.
Several times the meeting was on the verge of a breakdown. Back in May, it became known that it was planned on June 12 and will be held in Singapore, but since then Trump spoke of the cancellation of the summit due to the tough reaction of Pyongyang to military exercises in South Korea. The American leader abandoned his words after discussing what was happening on the phone with the president of South Korea Moon Zhe.
It is interesting that although North Korean propaganda shows everything as if Pyongyang competes on equal terms with Washington, in fact, this, of course, is not so. The United States economy larger than the North Korean several hundred times, 12 times more people live in the United States.
At the same time, North Korea is an extremely militarized country, it has a fourth largest army in the world (only China, India and the USA ahead). The North Korean regime has nuclear weapons and means of its delivery, which will allow you to strike at least the US allies in the region - Japan and South Korea.
So in Washington, apparently, they are not inclined to underestimate the possibilities of Pyongyan to destabilize the situation in East Asia - an extremely explosive region, where, however, over the past 60 years it was possible to avoid armed conflicts.
