Conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky died
Conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky has died at the age of 87. This was reported by the Moscow Conservatory, where he headed the department of opera and symphony conducting.
Gennady Rozhdestvensky in different years was the chief conductor of many well-known orchestras, including the orchestra of the Central Television and All-Union Radio of the USSR, the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR Ministry of Culture, the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (twice, in the 1970s and in the 1990s), the symphony orchestra BBC and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
Rozhdestvensky collaborated a lot with the Bolshoi Theatre, and in 1965-1970 he was its chief conductor.
As they wrote on the website of the Bolshoi Theater for the 85th anniversary of Rozhdestvensky, many Soviet composers - including Alfred Schnittke and Sofia Gubaidulina - "[were] obliged to him that their music sounded, despite all the obstacles and prohibitions."
