German intelligence agencies accused Russian hackers of cyberattacks on energy companies

The head of the Federal Service for the Protection of the Constitution of Germany, Hans-Georg Masen, said that he considers Russian hackers responsible for cyber attacks on German energy companies.

This is a cyber attack on the computer networks of a number of German energy companies, which the German authorities reported on June 13. As stated, the attackers managed to penetrate only the office networks of a small number of companies.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters that the Kremlin "does not know what he [Masen] is talking about."

“The handwriting of the perpetrators is actually just one of the indicators that the attack could have been controlled from Russia,” he said. Hans-Georg Masen did not provide details of the investigation.

• Most often associated with Russia are hackers from a group known as APT28 or Fancy Bear. They are called responsible for many cyber attacks, including on the Bundestag, the German Foreign and Defense Ministry, the US Democratic Party Committee, NATO, and the French television channel TV5 Monde.
• The US authorities believe that this group is connected with the GRU and participated in the Russian campaign to interfere in the elections. Because of this, the United States imposed sanctions against the leadership of the GRU.
• The Russian authorities deny involvement in any cyber attacks on foreign states and international organizations.
