Vladimir Uspensky died

Today, June 27, at the age of 87, the mathematician and linguist Vladimir Uspensky died.

Vladimir Andreevich Uspensky was born in 1930 in Moscow, in 1952 he graduated from the Mechanical and Mathematics Department of Moscow State University, was a student of Andrei Kolmogorov.

Since 1995, he headed the Department of mathematical logic and theory of algorithms of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University, was one of the organizers of the department of structural linguistics (now the department of theoretical and applied linguistics) of the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University. In 2006-2013 he was a teacher of summer linguistic schools.

The author of many books and more than a hundred scientific works, the philological and cultural works of Vladimir Uspensky were published in the magazines “New Literary Review”, “Unachable Mastard”, “New World”, “Banner”, “Questions of literature”.

Doctor of Physics and Mathematics (1964), Honored Professor of Moscow State University (1998), laureate of the Enlightener Prize in the field of natural and accurate sciences (for the book “Apology of Mathematics”, 2010).
