1988 XIX Conference of the CPSU

Thirty years ago, on June 28, 1988, the 19th All-Union Conference of the CPSU opened in Moscow and ended on July 1. It adopted five resolutions: "On the democratization of Soviet society and the reform of the political system", "On the fight against bureaucracy", "On interethnic relations", "On Glasnost" and "On Legal Reform".

For the first time in many decades, criticism of the leadership was allowed at an all-Union party forum. Boris Yeltsin, removed from his post as head of the Moscow communists in 1987 for criticizing the way perestroika was carried out, demanded his political rehabilitation. After the 19th Party Conference, fundamental reforms of the Soviet political system began.
