155 years ago, on July 1, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) began, which became the decisive battle of the American Civil War of 1861-1865. The Northern Army of the Potomac, led by General George Meade, repulsed all the attacks of the Northern Virginia Army of the Southerners under the command of Robert E. Lee, who was forced to retreat on the morning of July 4.
Although the sides suffered roughly equal total losses (a little over 23,000 each), the irretrievable losses of the southerners were much larger (10.5 thousand versus 8.5 thousand), and they proved to be much more sensitive to Li's smaller army. In the future, the southerners did not undertake such a large-scale invasion of the territory of the northern states.
