1933 Suicide of Nikolai Skripnik

85 years ago, on July 7, 1933, Mykola (Mykola) Skrypnik, deputy chairman of the Council of People's Commissars and head of the State Planning Committee of Ukraine, one of the architects of the Ukrainization ("indigenization") policy in the republic, committed suicide in Kharkov.

The suicide was provoked by a campaign launched against Skrypnik, connected with the Russification of Ukraine that had begun. They demanded that Skripnik renounce his views and write a letter of repentance. Posthumously, he was accused of creating "a new nationalist bias in the ranks of the party", and the publication of his works was stopped.
