Russia has asked Belarus for preliminary consent (agrement) to appoint Mikhail Babich , the Russian President's Plenipotentiary Representative in the Volga Federal District, as ambassador. A source close to the Kremlin told RBK about this.
Sources in both houses of parliament confirmed to the publication that Babić's candidacy will be discussed there next week.
RIA Novosti reported on Babich's possible appointment as ambassador to Belarus at the end of June. The Kremlin declined to comment on this information.
An RBC source close to the embassy in Minsk has been informed that the current Russian ambassador to Belarus, Alexander Surikov, will leave his post. Surikov, 77, has headed the Russian embassy in Minsk for 12 years now.
