2017 Death of Liu Xiaobo

A year ago, on July 13, 2017, Chinese human rights activist, philology teacher Liu Xiaobo, winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize "for his long non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China", died. In 2008, he drafted "Charter-08" demanding democratic reforms, which was signed by many Chinese intellectuals.

At the end of 2008, two days before the publication of "Charter-08", Liu Xiaobo was arrested and sentenced to 11 years in prison for incitement to undermine the government. Not only was he not allowed to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony, but he was also not allowed to receive it through his family and friends. A month before his death, when the human rights activist was diagnosed with liver cancer, he was transferred to a civilian hospital but was not allowed to travel abroad for treatment.
