Muscovites frightened by invasion of flying ants

Information has appeared on social networks about a large number of flying ants in the city center. As the Moscow agency was told by the press service of the capital's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, insects do not pose a danger to Muscovites.

“Ants do not pose a danger. The flight of males and queens is a natural short-term phenomenon that occurs once a year. Insects disperse to create new colonies,” the press service reported.

The department noted that the reason for the appearance of a large number of flying ants is favorable weather conditions. There is even a colloquial expression “day of the flying ants”, denoting a period of intense “mating flights”. As a rule, this is July, when warm and humid weather sets in after the rains, reports the portal TheUK.one .

Various kinds of anomalies are not uncommon in the capital. So, at the beginning of the year, Moscow residents noticed that the once ubiquitous sparrows began to be seen less and less often . This fact is confirmed by ornithologists: according to some estimates, the number of birds in the city has decreased several times. The reason for this phenomenon lies in the improvement: with the appearance of new artificial lawns, the insects with which the sparrows fed their chicks almost completely disappeared. In addition, there are much fewer ants, butterflies, beetles, grasshoppers and locusts in Moscow.
