Former Deputy Commander of Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Vyacheslav Varchuk, sentenced to six years in prison for accepting a bribe, will be tried on another episode of corruption, informed sources told Interfax.
“A criminal case is being investigated against Varchuk on another episode of corruption, and upon completion, the materials will be sent to the court for a new sentence,” said one of the agency’s interlocutors.
He could not disclose the details of this episode, noting that it was not related to receiving a bribe of 10 million rubles. For this bribe, on July 19, the Moscow Garrison Military Court sentenced Varchuk to six years in a maximum security colony and fined him 20 million rubles.
Varchuk was detained in March 2017, when he was deputy commander for financial and economic work. Later, Varchuk’s deputy, Alexander Kostin, was also detained and testified against his boss.
According to investigators, from December 2015 to February 2016, Varchuk, in collusion with Kostin, received a bribe of 10 million rubles. For this money, the investigation believes, they promised to help allocate an additional 250 million rubles to the communications department of the main command of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In March 2017, it became known that Varchuk admitted guilt, but was denied a plea deal. After this, Varchuk began to deny the accusation.
Kostin made a deal with the investigation; his charge was reclassified to Part 4 of Article 291.1 of the Criminal Code (mediation in bribery on an especially large scale). He was later sentenced to four years probation.
