New processors under load are able to “accelerate” (that is, increase their frequency) up to 4.8 gigahertz - that is, theoretically, they should work faster than their predecessors. But in fact, the opposite happens.
Dave Lee video blogger compared the performance of the new MacBook Pro with the I9 and MacBook Pro processor equipped with a weaker i7 (both models are 15-inch). As it turned out, that the first model works faster than the second, it must be cleaned in the freezer!
Dave Lee launched the Adobe Premiere Pro on both laptops and turned on the converting of the same video file. Last year’s MacBook Pro with the I7 processor coped with the task in 35 minutes, and the new MacBook with I9 for almost 40.
The video blogger suggested that the whole thing is in Trottling - a mechanism that reduces the performance of the processor with an increase in temperature. This mechanism is built into modern laptops and avoids the breakdown of equipment and fires due to overheating of processors.
In the usual state, the processors of i7 and i9 release the same amount of heat, but they “accelerate” to different frequencies - therefore, under load I9, more energy should be released. At the same time, there were no noticeable changes to the new MacBook Pro system.
To make sure that the matter was in Trottling, Lee launched rendering the same file on the new macbook, hiding it into the freezer. Result: 27 minutes.
Gizmodo notes that some users of another laptop with the Intel i9, Dell XPS 15 processor also complained about problems due to trottling. The publication advises users who are going to buy MacBook Pro to look at the version with the i7 processor - it is also very powerful, but costs several hundred dollars cheaper.
