1943 Overthrow of Mussolini

75 years ago, on July 25, 1943, "the chairman of the government, the leader of fascism and the founder of the empire" Benito Mussolini was removed from all posts and arrested as a result of a palace coup. King Victor Emmanuel III appointed Marshal Pietro Badoglio as the new head of the Italian government.

On the eve of July 24, the Great Fascist Council, meeting for the first time since 1939, passed a resolution demanding the resignation of Mussolini and the transfer of the supreme command of the army into the hands of the king. On July 27, the dissolution of the Fascist Party was announced.
