1798 Battle of Abukir
220 years ago, on August 1, 1798, the British fleet of Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated the French fleet of Admiral Francois Paul De Bruye by attacking it in the Aboukir Bay near the mouth of the Nile. A French naval commander was killed and 11 of the 13 French ships of the line were sunk or captured. The defeat at Aboukir predetermined the collapse of the Egyptian expedition of Napoleon Bonaparte.
