Mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor will meet in the ring on October 6, the UFC has confirmed. Earlier, this date was called by the father and coach of the Russian fighter as a possible day of the fight.

The fight will take place in Las Vegas as part of the UFC 229 tournament.

With a 26-0 victory record, the Russian Nurmagomedov was untouchable, and his recent victories <…> have only strengthened his position as one of the greatest fighters in the lightweight division. But Ireland's McGregor, the first UFC double-title winner, has built a career on achieving what is called the impossible and will try to put a 1 in Nurmagomedov's defeat column this fall and take the crown he hasn't conceded in the ring.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is the most popular MMA fighter in Russia, the current UFC lightweight champion, who has not lost a single fight in his career. He won the title in April 2018.
Irishman Conor McGregor, one of MMA's top stars, won the UFC lightweight title in 2016 but lost it after not defending it for too long. In 2017, McGregor, having suspended performances in MMA, had a fight with boxer Floyd Mayweather according to the rules of classic boxing (and lost).
In April, before Nurmagomedov's fight for the championship title in New York, McGregor and his supporters attacked the bus in which Nurmagomedov and other fighters were traveling - presumably due to a conflict between the Russian and the Irishman's sparring partner. McGregor turned himself in to police; in July , it was revealed that he was given a significant mitigation of the charges in exchange for restitution, five days of community service, and anger management courses.
