The court on Budanov lasted three years. At first he was recognized as insane and exempted from responsibility, then this decision was canceled and the court began again. Even the Chechen politicians and public figures loyal to Moscow demanded the most strict punishment for him. At the same time, Budanov became one of the main characters among Russian nationalists.

In July 2003, the court gave Budanov ten years for kidnapping and murder. He was sent to serve his sentence to the Ulyanovsk region, where the governor was then Vladimir Shamanov - the paratrooper and one of the main characters of both Chechen campaigns. Already in March 2004, Budanov filed a petition for pardon, in September of the same year, Shamanov satisfied him.

In response in Chechnya, rallies of protest were held, and Ramzan Kadyrov, who then headed the government of the republic, said on September 20, 2004: “Hundreds of law enforcement officers and ordinary residents of the republic are contacting the Chechen government <...> for them and thousands of others in Chechnya there is no difference between [the leader of the fighters Shamil] Basayev and Budanov, for both of them are guilty of The murder of civilians <...> If this [pardon of Budanov] will happen, we will find an opportunity to give him deserved. The next day, Budanov recalled a petition for pardon. He was released only in 2009 at parole.
