Evgeny Makarov was put in a punishment cell in Yaroslavl Colony No. 8 for refusing to clean the toilet while being recorded on video. This was reported in the telegram channel of the Public Verdict Foundation.
As human rights activists write, Makarov had to refuse, since cleaning the toilet while filming among prisoners leads to a loss of respect. “Public Verdict” calls refusal to clean up a formal reason for punishment. That is, employees use the “prison subculture” to put pressure on prisoners.
- In July, Novaya Gazeta published a video of the torture of Yevgeny Makarov in Yaroslavl Colony No. 1.
- Lawyer and lawyer of the “Public Verdict” Irina Biryukova, who gave the video of torture to “Novaya Gazeta”, left Russia due to threats against her.
- In April 2017, Evgeny Makarov, Bolotnaya Case defendant Ivan Nepomnyashchikh, and another prisoner Ruslan Vakhapov reported mass beatings and torture in Penal Colony No. 1 in the Yaroslavl Region. In June 2017, Makarov was beaten again, after which he had difficulty moving. A similar situation repeated in December 2017.
- The European Court of Human Rights twice took urgent measures against Makarov to ensure the safety of his life.
