Irish budget airline Ryanair on Friday, August 10, canceled every sixth flight - a total of about 400 flights across Europe due to a large-scale pilots' strike, RTE reports . The strike has affected air travel in countries including Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. A company spokesman said that more than 55,000 Ryanair customers would also be affected by the protest. The company offers passengers on canceled or delayed flights a refund, a ticket for the next flight, or a change in route.

The pilots' strike became the largest protest in the airline's history. It started on Friday morning and will last 24 hours.

Airline pilots are dissatisfied with working conditions, in particular the size of their salaries. Earlier, the head of the Cockpit pilots' union, Martin Locher, said that Ryanair was not trying to reach an agreement with crew members. The union has been negotiating with the management of the low-cost airline on increasing wages for six months. The parties have not yet reached any agreements. When discussing the problem with management, Ryanair is guided by the tariff conditions of the tour operator TUI, which, like the airline, uses the Boeing 737.

Ryanair considers the strike to be unfounded. “Our pilots from Germany have excellent working conditions. Their annual salary reaches 190,000 euros in addition to bonuses, and at the beginning of the year their salaries were raised by 20%. Ryanair pilots earn at least 30% more than Eurowings and 20% more than Norwegian,” the company’s marketing director Kenny Jacobs previously explained.

Ryanair currently flies on more than 1,800 routes to 215 airports in 37 countries. The company carried 130.3 million people last fiscal year. Its fleet consists of 400 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. According to Bloomberg, since the beginning of the year, shares of the low-cost airline have fallen in price by 10%. The company's capitalization is estimated at 15.5 billion euros.
