Yevgeny Makarov, who spoke about torture in the Yaroslavl colony, received state protection

Prisoner Evgeny Makarov was recognized as a victim in the case of torture in Yaroslavl IK-1, he received state protection, the Public Verdict Foundation told Dozhd.

According to lawyer Eldar Luzin, on August 8, Makarov was given a decree recognizing him as a victim. At the same time, the prisoner has not yet been interrogated in this status, the lawyer noted.

In addition, Makarov was informed that he had been assigned state protection due to a criminal case. The document, according to Luzin, does not say what it is expressed in. The execution was entrusted to the head of Yaroslavl colony No. 8, where Makarov is now serving his sentence.

On July 20, Novaya Gazeta published a video of Makarov’s torture. 2.5 hours after the publication, the Investigative Committee opened a case of abuse of power with the use of violence (clause “a” of Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code). Currently, 11 people are in pre-trial detention, and another is under house arrest.

Novaya Gazeta also published excerpts from interrogations of those involved in the case. Employees of Yaroslavl IK-1 said that they were instructed to carry out “educational work” with Makarov by the former head of the colony, Dmitry Nikolaev. He, according to the publication, ordered to film the torture on a video recorder in order to report on the fulfillment of the order.

The newspaper, citing survey protocols, claims that Nikolaev watched this video, and after that the recording was also sent to the first deputy head of the FSIN department for the Yaroslavl region, Gennady Barinov.
